For the Pasta
  • 8 ounces Penne Pasta You can substitute with rigatoni or fusilli.
For the Meat Sauce
  • 1 pound Ground Beef Can substitute with ground turkey.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive Oil Vegetable oil is an alternative.
  • 4 cloves Garlic (minced) Fresh garlic is preferred.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Sea salt or kosher salt recommended.
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper Freshly ground is best.
  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning Can substitute with oregano, basil, and thyme mix.
  • 1 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes Optional for heat.
For the Creamy Sauce
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream Half-and-half can be used.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Chicken broth can be a substitute.
For the Cheesy Topping
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese (freshly grated) Pre-grated is okay but won't melt as well.
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese (shredded) Provolone or fontina can be used.
For the Finishing Touch
  • ¼ cup Parsley (chopped, for garnish) Can substitute with basil or cilantro.

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Skillet
  • Colander

Method

Cooking Steps
  1. Begin by bringing a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions, usually about 10-12 minutes, until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add 4 cloves of minced garlic, sautéing for about 1 minute or until fragrant.
  3. Add 1 pound of ground beef to the skillet, breaking it apart. Cook for approximately 5-7 minutes or until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Season the cooked beef with 1 teaspoon of salt, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, and optional crushed red pepper flakes. Stir well.
  5. Lower the heat to medium, pour in 1 cup of beef broth and 1 cup of heavy cream. Stir to combine and bring to a gentle simmer.
  6. Carefully add the drained penne back into the skillet, stirring for about 2-3 minutes so the pasta absorbs the flavors.
  7. Gradually sprinkle in 1 cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese while stirring continuously, cooking over low heat until cheese melts.
  8. Sprinkle 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, cover the skillet, and let sit for about 3-5 minutes until mozzarella is melted.
  9. Before serving, sprinkle chopped parsley over the top for freshness and color.
